School Readiness Program

Helping Your Child Thrive in the Classroom

Starting school is a big milestone, but it can also be a source of deep anxiety. Perhaps you have watched your child struggle to sit still during preschool activities, or maybe a teacher has gently mentioned they seem restless or have trouble following group instructions.

In more difficult moments, you may have faced the heartbreak of a school admission rejection because your bright, capable child couldn't demonstrate their potential during an observation session.

If you are feeling frustrated, worried, or judged, we want you to know: You are not alone, and this is not a reflection of your parenting. Many children have the intelligence to succeed but lack the foundational developmental skills to navigate a structured classroom environment. At Seedlings, our therapy-led School Readiness Program is designed to bridge that gap.

What Is a School Readiness Program?

Many parents assume school readiness means knowing the alphabet or counting to 100. While academics are important, true readiness is about functional independence.

A School Readiness Program is a structured, therapeutic intervention designed to build the core skills required for formal schooling. Unlike a tuition center that focuses on what a child learns, we focus on how a child learns preparing their brain and body for the demands of a classroom.

It is about ensuring they have the sitting tolerance to listen to a story, the fine motor strength to hold a pencil without pain, and the emotional regulation to handle the frustration of a difficult task.

Signs Your Child May Need Support

It can be hard to distinguish between typical toddler behavior and signs that a child needs extra support. Early intervention is key. Your child may benefit from our program if you notice:

  • Restlessness and Hyperactivity: They cannot stay seated for a 10 minute activity and are constantly fidgeting or moving.
  • Difficulty Following Instructions: You often have to repeat requests, or they seem lost when given multi step directions.
  • Poor Pencil Grip or Aversion to Writing: They hold crayons awkwardly, complain their hand hurts, or avoid drawing and coloring activities.
  • Impatience and Impulsivity: Struggling to wait for their turn, snatching toys, or interrupting frequently.
  • Emotional Outbursts: Transitions, like leaving home for school, cause major meltdowns, or they become easily frustrated by small mistakes.

My Child is Smart. Why Are They Struggling?

This is the most common question heartbroken parents ask us. It is confusing to see a child who can solve complex puzzles at home struggle to pass a school interview.

The answer often lies in Sensory Processing and Executive Functioning. A classroom is a highly stimulating environment with bright lights, noisy peers, and hard chairs. If a child’s sensory system is overwhelmed, their brain goes into survival mode, making it physically impossible to sit still or listen.

We do not label your child; we see high potential that needs a stronger foundation. You can read more in our Occupational Therapy FAQs.

How Occupational Therapy Supports School Readiness

Occupational Therapy is the bridge between a child’s body and their job, which at this age is playing and learning effectively.

Our pediatric Occupational Therapists are experts in task analysis. If a child has poor pencil holding, an OT does not just force writing practice. We look at the root cause. Is it weak shoulder stability? Poor finger dexterity? A retained reflex?

By addressing the underlying sensory or motor gaps, we build a permanent physiological foundation for learning. This approach is fundamental to our Occupational Therapy services.
